“On this list I have the names of fourteen men and women,” Sophia announced. Lyle hit the sound box. Sounds of awe and terror floated into the air, accompanied by eerie music that gave Sarah the creeps. “The names on this list date back to 1978, nearly forty years ago. Mr. Earton was twenty-eight years old at that time in history.” Sophia stepped out from behind the wooden post and pointed at the circle of five hostages. “And one of our contestants works for Mr. Earton…in the line of murder, that is.” Lyle hit the sound box again. Sounds of anger and rage filled the stage. “I know, I know, it’s horrible.”

“What does it matter?” Ryan yelled. “You’ve destroyed our lives! Who cares who Mr. Earton has killed? Who cares which one of us is a killer?”

“He’s right,” Jill cried. “You’ve destroyed us all.”

Amanda glanced at Sarah and then nodded down to the handcuffs. Sarah studied Sophia, saw the woman zooming in on Jill, and quickly glanced down at the handcuffs. To her shock, Amanda was slowly and patiently working her right hand free. The woman had small, fragile wrists that any pair of handcuffs would have a difficult time holding. “When she gets close enough…I slug her…you shoot her…and then shoot the other clown,” she whispered to Sarah.

Sarah threw her eyes toward Lyle and struggled to see who was sitting out in the studio audience. So far, not a single sound or any sign of human movement had appeared out in the studio audience area, leading Sarah to believe that Sophia and Lyle were alone. But could there be more clowns around? “Not yet, June Bug,” she whispered back at Amanda. “There could be more clowns around.”

“How much longer, love?” Amanda begged. “We can’t—”

“You two,” Lyle yelled, “stop whispering!”

Sophia shot her eyes at Sarah and Amanda. “What are you two chatting about?” she demanded.

“Your wonderful outfit,” Amanda responded in a sarcastic tone. “What do you think, genius? We’re wondering how to escape this nightmare. I mean, really, do you really think we want to sit around all day and night with your ugly face and creepy clown voice? How stupid are you?”

Sophia narrowed her eyes, yanked out her gun, and approached Amanda. “You’re a bug on the rug to me, London,” she growled.

“Oh, go shove it in your ear,” Amanda popped back. “Do you think you’re something special…or scary…because you’re wearing a cloak and a creepy clown mask? I’ve dealt with worse than you, sister.” Amanda locked eyes with Sophia, struggling to see through the clown mask. “I’m the one who shot the Back Alley Killer, and I also tangled with his deranged daughter. But don’t think that’s all,” Amanda added. “I’ve been infected with a deadly virus…punched a deadly model in the face…slugged a little weirdo…been strangled. This is a vacation compared to some of the nightmares I’ve been caught in. So do me a favor and stop acting like you’re unique, sister, because all you are is
